First, some information about me physically. I'm short and stubby. This includes my feet. They are very wide for their length, and deep in terms of instep.

This makes buying shoes that aren't sneakers extremely difficult. TO whit, I have been trying to replace my trusty Mary Janes for over a year, as they were looking scruffy, and two months ago they gave up completely, spontaneously developing holes all over the place and leaving me with no shoe dressier than a walking boot.

Today, I went to a high-end sort of shoe place in desperation. I really hate paying that much for shoes, but I was really at the end of my rope. (Sign of my psychology - I have no problem with plonking down a hundred dollars for Merrell trainers or hikers, but dress shoes?) It turned out the woman on staff was the mother of two girls who were in my Sparks unit. She was all helpful and wonderful, and recommended "Clarks" brand shoes, and found me a pair of shoe shoes.

I was nearly in tears. They actually went onto my feet without digging into my bones. It's been years. They didn't hurt. They looked pretty. It's such a stupid thing to be so happy over... but they fit. Nice shoes fit onto my Shrek feet.

I bought them (well, Mum did, because she owed me money and this cleared it), and also a pair of ankle boots (also Clarks). I've never, ever had ankle boots before - not dressy ones. I do have a pair which look like I could kick someone's head in with them, with tread thicker than snow tires have, but none with heels.

I have 'nice' footwear. I may be in love with it.

Interestingly enough, I left my only pair (almost said "sole" pair... *groan*) of Clarks in Canada last time I was up.

You may want to try http://www.chesterbootshop.com -- It's where I bought my Doc Marten Mary Janes that fit nicely on my wide-ass feet.

Sole pair would have been funny :) In a groany sort of way.

Shoes and clothes are pretty much the only things I won't buy online, because I really like to see them on. I don't get the weird looks while trying on women's shoes that you'd probably garner. (Although it's funny - I've tried on men's shoes a couple of times and nobody's so much as blinked. Doesn't seem fair, really.)

You know what? I have the WORST time buying shoes, there are a lot of shoes I simply can't wear because they'll permenantly injure my feet or because I simply can't walk on them because of my balance problems. BUT I found this UNBELIEVEABLE shoe store. It's called Feet First. I don't know if they have them in Montreal or NL. But if they do, I highly recommend them. They sell stylish comfort shoes like Clarks, and Timberlands. And they also manufacture their own brand of shoe. The beauty of these shoes is that they are comfort shoes, but they aren't ugly looking orthopedic shoes, they're fashionable and very comfortable. I do all my shoe shopping there. It's become my store for life.

Hee! This was a Feet First. :) They do have them here, but if there's one in NL, it's bound to be in St. John's which is a long way away. :)

But yeah. Feet First love.

I know how you feel. I have a narrow heel, so it's next to impossible for me to find shoes that won't slip off my feet. I can wear boots and anything else high-top, but regular sneakers and the like, it's a crap shoot. It sucks, too, when I find a pair of shoes I really like, but I can't wear them because they won't stay on my feet. And I've tried every remedy imaginable, from inserts to extra pairs of socks, but nothing works. It sucks. I love my yellow Chucks, though. They're the same kind Darrell has in that clip on the GBDVD where he's dancing around in yellow sneakers. I also have a pair of Merrell hiking boots that I've had for 2 yrs, but I think it's time to retire them because one boot squeaks when I walk. I love them, though, because they're waterproof and insulated, which makes them great winter boots.

Merrell shoes are the best in the world in terms of hikers. Expensive, but I've had mine for nearly three years and they're still like new.
