I'm back from Prince Edward Island, exhausted, tanned, and probably kind of stinky as well, since we made the trip back from PEI in one day (for those of you keeping score at home, that's fifteen hours of driving from our last campground at Cedar Dunes Provincial Park) and it was hot.
A thoroughly good time was had, even if we didn't manage to get out to sea like we wanted, as it was too windy and Mariko's SCUBA trip got cancelled. We did swim in the ocean, though, and I taught her how to kayak. She was skeptical at first (I won't fit in the boat! Okay, so I fit in the boat. I'll sink.), but thoroughly enjoyed it and is thinking of signing up for lessons. I got to geek out a bit with the lady who ran the place - she had the new Necky catalogue, and we drooled a little bit. All I need is three thousand dollars... right.
The wildlife was pretty cool, too. We saw masses of herring and black-backed gulls, swarms of swallows, which were nesting in the cliffs (I took pictures - I hope they turn out okay), gannets, seals of indeterminate species (I'm not good at telling seals apart when I can only see their heads!), a humpback whale swimming offshore, and (after a thunderstorm) a very bedraggled fox.
Also masses of roadkill, mostly skunks and porcupines. Sad.
We are very proud that we did not do anything Anne of Green Gables related, but we did visit the World's Only Potato Museum in O'Leary. I am now thoroughly versed in the ways of the spud.
I taught her poker and how to recognise birds by the way they fly and the shape of them, and she spent the whole trip trying to teach me how to belch on purpose. I still can't do it. I'm told it's a matter of creating a bubble in your throat... I keep nearly gagging. I shall practise in secret and one day surprise her.
Fantastic trip. If I have your address, you'll probably be receiving a postcard; some of them will be mailed from Montreal, though, because I carefully printed out your addresses on a sheet of paper and managed to leave it at home. Doh. They did all get written in PEI, though, mostly sitting on a beach.
I'm quite chuffed about my tan - it's not too dark, and I was wearing sunscreen the whole time, but I'm not corpsy=looking like I usually am, and I managed not to get raccoon eyes from my sunglasses, which is a plus, particularly since I'm going to have to be in someone's wedding pictures in a few days' time!
Anyone do anything exciting while I was away?
