Had my third session with my Sec 1 student today. It went well; he's still having some trouble remembering to complete things, but is doing better. He's also making connections in terms of math being kind of everywhere, so I told him about the Fibonacci sequence and flower petals and pine cones. He thought that was really cool.
He was also a little bit freaked out about the future, because he has an older brother who is freaking him out with tales of ALGEBRA and how hard ALGEBRA is. So I pointed out that he's adding, multiplying, dividing, and subtracting perfectly well, and that that's all algebra is, and we solved a simple equation for the value of x, and that was totally easy, so now he knows he knows how to do algebra and is significantly less freaked out about the looming prospect of Sec 2 math.
