Hugo nominations are open.
a) YAY.
b) I am eligible to vote in the Hugos this year.
c) This is where I suddenly realize that I only read two published-in-2011 books in 2011. I've read a bunch of short stories, though. I need to do some more "checking out of eligible works". Any recommendations? I like to make educated choices, and "this novel is the best because it's the only one I have read" is not an educated choice.
(I am sad I was not eligible to nominate the 2008 Hugo nominees, because man, "Doctor Alien" by Rajnar Vajra would have gotten props from me. Some googling indicates that it is available for free on what looks like a legal website, here: ebook3600.com, and I highly recommend reading it. It's brilliantly entertaining and does some fascinating exploration of the concept of how humanity's essential madness could be turned into an asset. There are a few short stories in the series, and I really hope that at one point there'll be enough for me to purchase in an omnibus collection.)
