Mar. 17th, 2011 01:51 amThere was a mouse in my apartment -
it ate my food,
left scraps of plastic on the counter
next to the bag of bread,
divots carved from the slices,
perfectly round.
We laid traps.
It scurried behind the heaters,
and froze on the floor,
paws asplay - if it did not move,
it must have thought,
we would not see it.
The light came through its tiny ears.
We looked away and it was gone.
We put down poison.
It must have been delicious.
This morning it was still on the floor,
mid-room, tail stretched ruler straight behind it,
paws asplay, legs asplay, no more
strength left to it except in the tiny ribshaking breaths,
so quick, so quick.
I could not bear to kill it quick and
I could not bear to watch it die slow and so
it panted out its little life on the linoleum
behind a closed door.
