Oct. 27th, 2004 05:09 pmFor anyone who's interested, this is the kayak I paddle: http://www.necky.com/zoarsport.htm
I like it very much - I tried a few different kayaks (we all sort of switched around on the first day to find the one we liked best), and this one fits me perfectly. The thigh braces are in the place my legs go to naturally, the rudder pedals are the right width apart... *sigh* I'm in love with a boat AND a pair of skis now. This is very sad. Does anyone have a spare thousand dollars floating around? That'll get me the boat, which is a start. *g*
Kayaking felt really good today. I've gotten the hang of how far I can edge my kayak, which means I didn't capsize again. I've gotten better at keeping my centre of gravity as well, so I'm less tippy. I can brace better, my draws and sculls are coming along, and my forward stroke is... well, effortless compared with how I was at the beginning of the semester. I don't even have to think about it anymore. I just go. It's wonderful. I'm slower than most of the people in the class, but a lot of that can be attributed to kayak design - mine is the shortest in length and the widest in beam, so there's more drag and less directional stability.
The TA has a fibreglass one. *drools*
One thing that was unhappy was that F. (one of the other students) became hypothermic. We don't know how she got so cold, because she stayed dry and was dressed every bit as warmly as anyone else. We piled sweaters on her and sat her between me and Mark on the way home, with both of us wrapped around her as much as we could manage (not easy sitting on a van bench), but she was still shivering like crazy. She went back with Mark to his place afterwards because it was closest and we didn't want her being alone until she was properly warm. Not shiny at all, at all.
Aside from that, today has been good. I learned a new word too - 'Williwaw' - the first one of you to tell me what it means gets a prize :)
