I'm reading a Harry Potter fic at the moment which is absolutely brilliant. The writer's first language is German, however, and I'm pretty sure the fic hasn't been beta'ed. Sometimes the sentence structure is a little funky (words that should be contracted not being contracted, that sort of thing), but on the whole it's better than a lot of fics where the author's first language is English.

However, Harry and Janus (an absolutely spiffing OC) have just fallen into a poodle of mud.

The mental image makes me laugh, especially having seen some really muddy dogs in my time.
