Nov. 22nd, 2011 06:40 pmI just found out that Anne McCaffrey died yesterday.
I`m not sure what to say. I found Sassinak, The Death of Sleep, and Generation Warriors in a church rummage sale for ten cents when I was eight, and stole The Rowan from my mother's nightstand when she checked it out of the library (I'm not sure why she checked it out; my mother's tastes tend towards crime novels rather than science fiction).
I got into Pern as a teenager and devoured the books whole. I can't count how many times I've read Dragonquest and The White Dragon.
As an adult, I'm aware that there are issues with her books. I do not care. They were the first ever military science fiction I'd ever read which featured a female protagonist who was tough and smart and didn't need rescuing any more frequently than the male characters did and was the epitome of an excellent officer and leader of troops. I wanted to ship out on the Zaid Dayan under Sassinak so badly; I used to lie awake at night and tell myself stories about the adventures I had, and pretend I was conversing with the Thek.
One of the fandoms I offered for Yuletide this year was a McCaffrey fandom; it wasn't the one I got assigned, but once I'm done my assignment, I may damn well write that story anyway.
I loved her books. I am terribly, terribly sad that she will not write any more.
