Mar. 13th, 2011 06:39 pmOn Friday I went down to the Glynmill Inn ballroom and attended the evening March Hare festivities. Among the various poets and musicians was novellist Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, who went next-to-last, about three beers past sober, and raced through excerpts from his novel at breakneck pace (Sample: "I've got three minutes left, I won't put this last bit in context, you'll all be very confused and I don't care!").
It was very, very funny. Ghosted is a book about a young man who accidentally finds himself ghostwriting suicide notes for people. Based on the contextless exerpt from the end, it all goes horribly wrong when one of his customers is mentally disturbed.
More so than the average person who commissions a ghostwritten suicide note, I mean.
I couldn't quite justify spending hardback-money on the book--not that it wouldn't have been totally worth it, it's just that my recreation budget through the end of April is shot--, but will be looking for it in paperback, and I hope Shaughnessy turns up at next year's Hare as well so that I can get it signed.
Also performing was Ron Hynes, which was really cool - I love his music a lot. If you're into Newfoundland music at all, I guarantee you've heard at least one of his songs, even if you don't know it. Every Newfoundland band does at least one Ron Hynes song. He's brilliant.
He didn't sing this song, but it's one of my favourites:
