Thing I'm Wishing People Would Get:
Apr. 8th, 2010 10:50 pmYou have freedom of speech. That's great, that's wonderful. I am immensely proud to live in a place and participate in virtual spaces where freedom of speech is valued.
Along with that right comes this: you are responsible for what you say. If it's offensive, that's on you. If it's stupid, that's on you. If it's wrong, that's on you. You don't get to say "well, it's just my opinion" if you've hurt someone and there was any possible way you could have stated it that wouldn't have hurt them.
There's no such thing as a right without an accompanying responsibility. You have the right to vote; you have the responsibility to a) educate yourself and then b) exercise your right. Otherwise you forfeit it. You have the right to receive aid. You have the responsibility to provide it when able.
