I have worked out why my parents didn't flip about me losing all my travel documents.
It is because not so many years ago (fewer than five), my father did the Exact Same Thing. Only he realised it a scant two weeks before his travel date, instead of well in advance like I did.
It's a credit to my folks, honestly. I was talking with them on the phone yesterday, and their voices were a wee bit strained on the subject, but they were very carefully Not Flipping Out. I've got to admire them for that. I disagreed with the standards they set for me when I was a kid, but they were at least never hypocritical, and when they were and I called them on it they admitted to it.
