Major Minor Problem
Mar. 25th, 2004 10:18 pmI love that I can use Major as a modifier for Minor and be completely grammatically correct in doing so.
Except that my title was a fragment. Furthermore, that last sentence started with an 'except', which is a no-no. But it's all good, because in the assignment my English prof handed out today (is she NUTS?! Like I really need another paper to write... and the subject... ew...), she asked us to site (sic) our references.
Oh! There's one! *marks it with an x on the map*
*cough* Yeah.
With regards to the above entry title... I'm having problems with my minor. I'm not sure I want it to be Folklore already, although I think that might just be the class I'm taking this semester, which I sleep through about as often as I stay awake through it. It's just... so not involving. It's lecture style, and has no textbook, and I'm having real problems. I don't learn by taking notes, because I'm too worried I'll miss something important, and I wind up transcribing rather than listening, and then I can't study afterwards because I can't read my frenzied handwriting. I learn by listening in class, by answering questions, by asking questions, and reading my textbook.
But yeah. I'm seriously considering switching my minor to Geography. I have a meeting with one of my geography profs (this semester's, since he's slightly easier to talk to than last semester's) tomorrow afternoon, and I may speak to last semester's on Monday - they're both heavily involved with the EVST program as well as the Geography department, so they should be able to help me out as far as feasability goes. I had a quick chat with Dr. N after class today, and apparently it will be difficult and may give me an extra semester, because MUN does not allow me to count classes towards both my major and my minor. Which I think is really silly.
But I like Geography, I really do. I like the physical aspect. I love being able to look at the land around me and say to myself 'this is like this because...' I love the language: cirques and eskers and promontories. I like the human aspect of it too: knowing where things are, knowing why people are migrating from here to here, knowing the roots of conflicts and peaces in the world, the interrelationships between languages.
It's _relevant_, is what I'm trying to say, I guess. It won't be easy, admin wise, but I'm plenty stubborn.
The other option would be a minor in General Science. I could do some Ecology courses, some Environmental Science courses (not too sure how that differs from Ecology), some Earth Science courses (aka Geology). I wouldn't have to touch a Physics lab, or dissect anything. Not that the university can force me to dissect something. I refuse to on ethical grounds; I do not believe it is right for the sole purpose of a creature's life to be being killed, mutilated, and then thrown out. If you're going to kill something... eat it and be properly grateful to it. I also believe Physics labs to be unethical because they're cruel and unusual punishment for those of us forced to go through them :p That would be a good minor to give some dpeth to my Arts major.
The third option is to stick with Folklore, which is interesting but not likely to help me find work (would you like fries with that? *notes answer in 'regional variances in "No, thank you" study'*)
On the other hand, look who I'm talking to :p I know there are people reading this doing degrees in English and Mediaeval Welsh Lit ;) Possibly a Philosophy major, as well, but he doesn't have an LJ and, while he has this address, has not commented yet so I don't know if he's reading it :p If he is, would he be so kind as to click on the 'make some music' link just below here and send me a smiley face or something?
You know what? I have problems... but I am so very lucky to have these kinds of problems to worry about :D
Love you all.
