Dad took me downtown to the Paramount (read - ridiculously expensive, but the seats are nearly La-Z-boys, I can stretch my legs as far as they go, and the top of the seat in fron of me is level with my ankles!) to see Master and Commander today, and I was astonished at how accurate the ships were. You need to understand, the Napoleonic War is my favorite war. The tactics were pretty terrible, the uniforms were stupid, but it was great in scope and invention.

Plus it's inspired some really great movies and books, and isnt as overdone as WW2.

They had the cramped quarters on board ships right, the wasp-sided colours of the ships right... there was creaking during the whole film. If anyone had figured out how to give a smell experience, I bet it would have reeked of rotting meat, gunpowder and sewage. Excellent. My only qualm was that the sailors looked remarkably clean in the hair department - although, hair-wise, they got the styles right for the enlisted men: short except for a rats tail whose length denotes seniority among the sailors. Very cool. (yup... the original crew cut was a mullet, nearly!)

There was one bit which made me think very much of Ace Rimmer, and I couldn't watch it. (Wounds I'm okay with. Surgery, I'm not. *shudder*) I thought Russel Crowe did a good job, and the kid playing one of the middies was excellent.

Silly Hats off!
