Of Societies and Exams and things.
Mar. 2nd, 2004 11:08 pmIn English we are watching 'Hamlet'. I feel somewhat resentful of all those snow days now, as we do not have time to watch the Branagh version - however, we are going with next best, which is Olivier.
(I kinda like the one with Ethan Hawke, too, but I gather that will make me appear lowbrow, so sh!)
I also got back my in-class essay, with an 80% and comments as follows: 'Excellent job - you pick up on sound and figurative language well and "get" that the narrator is jealous of the boors' sleep. Just a few minor grammatical errors.'
Eighty is grand; however, if the only problem was a 'few minor grammatical errors', twenty percent off seems somewhat harsh, especially since I can only see two when i go through it, and one of those is a word she didn't know, which I'm SURE exists - sussuration. I have seen it. It is an onomatopoeic word. I'm going to go talk to her, go through the essay again, and see what the other errors are (and if there aren't any, I may gently hint that an eighty-five might be more appropriate). I'm not going to present it as 'I think I deserve better', I'm going to present it as 'what should I pay special attention to next time?' I think that's the tactful way to go about it. Last thing I want to do is annoy a professor.
I had my astronomy midterm tonight as well, and it went remarkably smoothly considering that I was prepared to take it two weeks ago, and have since not done very much, studying-wise. The only thing I was really not sure (the others, if I'm wrong, I am wrong about with conviction) of was why fusion reactions actually cool the cores of stars, so I wrote something about reduced pressure because that made sense and left it at that. And I made a little sketch. The sun had sunglasses on, and was saying 'Hi Doug!' The sketch wasn't part of my answer, though, it was because my professor likes things like that. He laughed at my methane cow.
I have also joined the Grenfell Creative Writing Society (name subject to change because there's money in it if we change it to what the old society was called, as they are now defunt and still have $140 in the bank!).
On Sunday, March the 21st, at the Backlot, I will be reading my poetry. Aloud. In front of people. What have I DONE?
It isn't that I don't think it's good poetry. I recognize that it could be better, because there's always room for improvement, but on the whole it's not bad. But it always looks so much better in black and white on paper than it sounds coming out of my mouth, somehow.
*frets*
On the other hand, I have very little to worry about, school-wise, in the next few days, so that's nice.
OOOH! Telemark tomorrow! WHEEEEE!!!!! I can't wait! I'm going to be bruised and sore and aching, and it's going to feel GOOD.
I really do need to buy some sunglasses, though, because it has (gasp!) been sunny and lovely for three days now, and according to residents, this trend may continue. I need sunglasses to prevent blindness. Only problem is my dinky little head. I can never find adult sunglasses that don't fall off, and all the kids ones are... er... very brightly coloured.
